Intervention: Growing line of caskets
09/03/11 || Lord K Philipson
We get sent so much shit from labels and bands. It’s hard to fire up excellent review after excellent review when you are being bombarded with bullshit music most of the time. We hate crappy-ass recordings of the supposed “next big thing”. You all fucken blow, so fuck you. Fuck you. And fuck you. So… what is this then?
A 3-track demo from Finland, that’s what it is. Finland isn’t really my top pick when it comes to countries producing fantastic music. Sure, they got Nightwish and MA Numminen, but that’s pretty much it. And yes, I was kidding about Nightwish. I wouldn’t be making jokes about Numminen though. That shit is FTW!
Intervention claim to play thrash metal and who am I to argue with that after going thru this recording? I would be exaggerating if I say that I am floored by the material, but this one has it’s semi-highs and absolute-lows, and I will present them here:
SEMI-HIGHS:
1. A few of the riffs actually come across as ok. Nothing that will blow your mind though.
2. It sounds like the bass player knows his way around his instrument in a few sections.
3. Some of the stuff reminds me a bit of early Believer (or actually – I am stretching things real hard to come up with some semi-highs, coz Intervention sounds nothing like Believer). And despite them idiots being christians, they did a few good albums a hundred years ago. Really.
4. “Rattlesnake Skin and Forked Tongue” is a cool title.
5. You can download this for free. Probably becoz no one would give a fuck about buying it, but now it’s FREE!!! Go get it. Listen. Delete.
ABSOLUTE LOWS:
1. The production leaves room for quite a bit of improvement. The guitar sound is weak, and so is the drumsound.
2. They haven’t really found the best singer in the world on “Growing line of caskets”. The half-growl combined with higher pitched screams (probably courtesy of some of the other guys in the band) is decent, not more – not less. It’s nice to hear some variety in the vocals, it’s just a shame they aren’t top of the line.
3. The sought-after aggression and brutality is nowhere to be found.
4. Throwing in rockish riffs (listen to the opener, for instance) is not working.
5. Thrash metal of today isn’t really cutting it. This is not only Intervention’s fault.
6. Intervention is a shit name.
As you can see, the lows are beating the highs. Intervention has a long way to go before eventually being a name to pay attention to. Or, to be perfectly honest:
This music has no future.
